Annotated Summary
In the article 'Elevated levels of iron in groundwater in Prey Veng province in Cambodia: a possible factor contributing to high iron stores in women', J Water Health (2015) discussed the health effects caused by 'elevated levels' of iron, arsenic and manganese found in groundwater and the method to improve on the water quality. According to J Water Health (2015), iron is a mineral necessary for the human body to perform the required functions like 'red blood cell reproduction'. At the same time, the article also mentioned that the few areas in Cambodia where high level of manganese, iron and arsenic that were discovered in groundwater is a public health concern. The article states that high levels of manganese in drinking water could cause detrimental neurological effects in children. The article also states that high concentration of iron in water did not pose 'significant health issues' but it could result in poor taste, color and odor. Maximum levels of iron in drinking water were set by Word Health Organisation (WHO) due to 'undesirable esthetic properties'. The article mentioned that installing point-of-use water filtering systems is one of the 'successful' method in improving 'microbial water quality at household level'. The authors state that BioSand filter can obtain '~99% removal of both bacteria and iron' and is commonly used as a household filter in Cambodia. In conclusion, this article is very similar to our research project in terms of the parameters mentioned that causes fluctuation in water quality and it helps by explicitly explaining the effects of excess manganese and iron in water source. It also provides the plausible engineering method in tackling water quality issues which is the water filtering systems.

ReplyDeleteThanks very much, Kang Le, for sharing this detailed summary of an academic paper. It has lots of useful info, and it is, as you mention, relevant to your project.
ReplyDeleteHowever, you still seem to have some problems citing a source using tjhe APA. Check out this webpage: http://columbiacollege-ca.libguides.com/apa/websites
You might remember the example I shared in class: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1zzddSbctpAPkq9D6aJEXph8Qwl9FVwue
In any case, I really appreciate your hard work. I'll give more specific feedback in class.
Thank you professor for taking the time to read through the annotated summary. I will refer to the APA style and work on my citation.
